The city courthouse in Crown Point, Indiana, hosts its annual Tank and Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 25. At 5 p.m., at the Lake County Courthouse, Mayor Peter Land will begin the tradition by lighting the tree. Watch on as the beautiful tree lights up in glimmering, multicolored lights, signaling the start of the holiday season. At 5:45 p.m., not far from the courthouse at the intersection of Goldsborough and Main streets, the tank lighting happens. The city officials line the tank with the same type of lights draped on the tree.

While the tank also represents the start of the Christmas season, it means more to the citizens. The tank is an M-4 Sherman built in 1944, and it sits on display in the city to honor veterans and fallen soldiers. The Chicago Tribune reported that “Though it’s believed the tank never saw battle, it served a use by the National Guard from 1941 to 1946 when 80,000 Sherman tanks were built.”

Address: 2293 North Main St., Crown Point.

Santa Parade

Grab the kids for the Santa Parade on Saturday, November 26, at 10 a.m., and you have a couple of options for beginning the family adventure. If you want to see Santa land by helicopter, arrive at the Lake County Sheriff’s Department at the Pointe Plaza and park in the lot. Kids can watch Santa exit from the aircraft and greet him before he climbs aboard Molley the Trolley. Then, you can get back into your vehicle and go to a spot along the parade route. Emergency responders, like firefighters and police, will escort Santa.

If you forgo seeing Santa coming in on a helicopter, you can still greet him as he enters through the lower level of the courthouse. Santa Claus will be available to meet with kids and families until 4 p.m. For everyone’s safety, remain behind the orange cones if you exit your vehicles.

Address: 1900 N. Main St., Crown Point.

The Santa Run, Walk & Ride

There’s nothing quite like a brisk run on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, through Crown Point to wake you up. The event has been a tradition for the city since 1982. The Hometown Happening’s Santa Run, Walk & Ride is perfect for those who enjoy running, especially with a holiday theme. You can wear a full-on Santa suit or your favorite elf hat as you take on the 5K running journey with a 1-mile walk. Registration for the race is open now, and you can sign up online or with a mail-in form.

If running isn’t your thing, that’s okay because you’re still able to participate. Get in your car to cheer and honk as the runners and walkers pass through Main Street. There are many other exciting aspects of the run, including meeting Robin Rock, host of 93.9 LITE FM, speaking with Santa, taking pictures in the selfie booth, and eating pizza from Carriage Court Pizza.

If you sign up before Dec. 17, the prices are $20 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under, and free for three and under. Showing up on the day of the event is fine, but the price will be $25 for everyone. Be sure to order a shirt before Dec. 8 for an additional $15. Sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the race officially starts at 8:30 a.m.

Address: St. Mary’s School, 405 East Joliet St., Crown Point.

At the Jerry Ross elementary school, the Winfield Community Foundation is hosting the holiday bazaar. You can enjoy a delicious breakfast with Santa in the morning, from 9 a.m. to noon, and shop at the holiday craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meal is $10 for adults and $8 for kids 10 and under. There are several activities for kids to enjoy, including talking and taking pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, playing games, crafting their own ornaments, getting their faces painted, and making reindeer food to leave out on Christmas Eve.

At the craft fair, browse several vendors and complete your holiday shopping list. The Winfield Community Foundation will host a silent auction where you can bid on certain items, and the money benefits the foundation. To get $2 off your ticket, bring two non-perishable food items for donation to the food bank.
